I’v been watching the new Bill Moyers series on CH21, and wrote this recommendation recently in two entries on Facebook.
I’ve been watching Bill Moyers’s new interview program on CH21 and recommend it highly. It comes on late-ish (11-ish) and is often repeated (again, late-ish) through the week. There is an accompanying website www.BillMoyers.com where you can get all the details, and even watch any missed-episodes.
Moyers & Company | BillMoyers.com
BillMoyers.com is a new digital destination providing access to the continuum of Bill Moyers’ work in broadcast journalism, highlighting the current weekly series, Moyers & Company…
Moyers picked up on Newt Gingrich’s ongoing negative references to SAUL ALINSKY, famous Chicago “community organizer” who died in 1972. [But Moyers is a little out of touch: for the past several years, Limbaugh-Hannity-Levin+++ have run a daily tirade against Alinsky –the socialist-marxist-hell, yes, satanist…]
His most famous book is “Rules for Radicals” (1971) –both Hilary Clinton AND Barack Obama admired him! (Check out his Wiki listing. His organizing ability was universally admired –Wm F Buckley spoke of him as “close to an organizational genius”; Dick Armey tried to get the Tea Party-ers to get organized along Alinsky lines –but (clearly) failed. [Anger-Blame is not a productive (or attractive) emotion…]
Adlai Stevenson said of him: “Alinsky’s aims ‘most faithfully reflect our ideals of brotherhood, tolerance, charity and dignity of the individual.'”
You know what strikes me about Saul Alinsky? He sounds like he could be the/a father of Occupy Wall Street.
[Somewhere at home, in “my” house, I have a copy of Saul Alinsky’s book –AUTOGRAPHED by…..Saul Alinsky. I looked for it today, without success…..]
OTHER ALINSKY INFO:
Mayor Richard Daley (the infamous) hated Sauil Alinsky –but allowed (on S.A’s death that “we both loved Chicago”.
[That’s impressive: I don’t think the right-wing is capable of anything THAT generous anymore.]
Saul Alinsky was a dedicated individual –he never joined anything, and put down all organized systems, whether it was Church, or Communism, or Nazism …as “doctrinaire, humorless and intellectually constipated.”
It is genuinely offensive that anyone –especially those rightwing bloviators– would put him down and insult him WITHOUT saying anything about him.
There is, somewhere, a long interview that SA did with Playboy magazine in 1971, that I have not yet read.
I have been especially struck by the synchronicity that OWS seems to have with Saul Alinsky. Though OWS does worry me that it might not cope with its disorganization…..
Maybe time to check out SauL Alinsky, guys…..
