Media Inaugural Cliches: The Winner –“Did you ever think you would live to see this day?”

I’ve been sick in bed for the last couple of days, but  I’ve been on duty monitoring Inaugural Cliches….

There are many, but one particular Cliche Non-Question (good for a groan everytime I hear it) is way ahead of all the others. It has of course to be asked in tones that are suitably hushed  and  deferential.

It is this: the interviewer asks the interviewee about Barack’s Inauguration:
“Did you ever think…that you would live…to see this day?”

[The Answer, by the way, –if you haven’t guessed– has to be: “No.” ]
By the way, to “Did you ever think…?” you can add, “…in your wildest dreams…” or some such, but –for cliche purposes,  it counts as the same basic question.

I myself have come up with an alternative answer: To “Did you ever think…that you would live…to see this day?”, I propose –if asked– to answer:
“Well…yes and no. I did think I would live to see the day, but I thought it was going to be next Tuesday!”

Feel free to use it –with or without credit.
